Ink is a thing of magic. With it authors are able to spin tales, build worlds, break hearts, make other hearts fall in love, kill in gruesome detail, miraculously heal, even bring back the dead. Knowing what magic ink possesses, some authors have even played with the idea of using this magic within their own books. In INKHEART and its accompanying INKSPELL and INKDEATH, Cornelia Funke creates a world where characters can be read out of books, and people read into them. (Jasper Fforde does the same thing in his Friday Next series.) As a writer I find it a fascinating idea to ponder. Can you imagine hunting with Legolas? Or having pint of butterbeer with Hagrid? Funke incorporates this interesting concept while at the same time spinning a magical adventure that’s great fun to read. Middle elementary and up is the perfect age to enjoy this trilogy.
